About this event

API Houston welcomes Tom Knode , Principal Consultant with vPSI Group , for our November General Meeting at the Petroleum Club of Houston.

How Leadership Engagement of Employees Leads to Better Safety—and Business—Performance

Strong safety performance is not created by policies and procedures alone. Leadership behavior, workforce engagement, and organizational culture can materially influence how effectively an organization identifies risk, responds to operational challenges, and improves performance.

Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in health, safety, and environment leadership, Tom Knode will examine the relationship between leadership engagement, employee participation, safety culture, and business performance. The discussion will also incorporate concepts surrounding Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) within the broader context of leadership and organizational culture.

Knode has held HSE leadership roles at both regional and global levels for large and small companies and has been actively involved in developing and executing strategies designed to improve employee engagement and HSE performance. He served on the Society of Petroleum Engineers Board of Directors as the HSE representative from 2008–2011, has co-chaired five SPE HSE conferences, and has authored or co-authored more than 20 technical papers, principally focused on safety leadership and culture.

This program is designed for executives, HSE leaders, engineers, operations professionals, managers, and others responsible for building organizations in which safety performance and business performance reinforce one another.
