Rodd Bland is the son of blues legend Bobby “Blue” Bland and the godson of B.B. King . He began playing drums at age three, learning from his father’s drummers John “Jab O” Starks and Harold “Peanie” Portier. He went on to play in his father’s original band for many years, performing alongside him until Bobby Bland’s death in 2013 . Growing up surrounded by blues royalty, Rodd also toured and recorded with artists like Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Bobby Rush. In 2022, he won a Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist Album and was named Most Outstanding Drummer by Living Blues Magazine.

The Members Only Band takes its name directly from Bobby “Blue” Bland’s 1985 comeback album “Members Only” on Malaco Records, whose title track became one of his most beloved later singles. The band features musicians who played with Bobby Bland during his career, including guitarist Harold Smith, bassist Jackie Clark, keyboardist and vocalist Chris Stephenson, and a horn section with Marc Franklin, Scott Thompson, and Kirk Smothers. Their repertoire focuses on Bobby Bland’s later-era sound—a blend of swinging big band arrangements, slapped bass, and slinky guitar funk. Rodd’s drumming is described as dynamic and fluid, honoring his father’s classics while adding his own musical voice.

The Continental Club in Houston holds special significance for Bobby “Blue” Bland himself, who performed there during his career. The venue, housed in a converted 1920s drugstore, is known for its intimate atmosphere. For his son to recreate those classics there with the original band members creates a kind of emotional full circle.
