A young boy and his childhood sweetheart leave their hometown for Taipei, where they navigate the uncertainties of work and life in the big city. When he is conscripted and sent to an outlying island for military service, their relationship is sustained through letters and the quiet rituals of waiting. Set among the lives of young people leaving home in 1970s Taiwan, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s film finds profound emotion in what remains unsaid: a letter, a train ride, a cigarette, a landscape slowly disappearing into the wind.
