About this event
Three young people drift through Taipei, searching for somewhere to belong.
Frustrated by the monotony of exam preparation, Hsiao-kang escapes into the neon-lit streets and arcades of Ximending, where he becomes fascinated by Ah-tze, a rebellious young thief who seems to embody the freedom he longs for. Alongside Ah-tze's girlfriend, Ah-kuei, the three drift through a city of motorcycles, midnight streets, video games, and restless desire. Tsai Ming-liang's debut captures a generation suspended between adolescence and adulthood, finding loneliness beneath the surface of a rapidly changing Taipei.
TAIWAN SENSIBILITY The universal feelings of coming of age—rebellion, loneliness, and the restless search for belonging—take on a distinctly Taiwanese texture in the Taipei of the ’90s.
