About this event

The CLASS Distinguished Lecture program will begin with a public screening of a selected segment from the Talking Black in America documentary series to connect linguistic issues with social justice. The program is designed especially for students in COMD 2376 and COMD 3321, while also welcoming other students, faculty, and community guests.

Following the screening, Dr. April Baker-Bell, Associate Professor of Language, Culture, and Justice in Education at the University of Michigan, will present Teaching, Language, and the Making of a Linguistic Justice Scholar. Drawing on personal narrative and critically conscious qualitative research, Dr. Baker-Bell will discuss Black students’ language experiences, linguistic justice, student voice, identity, schooling, and educational equity. The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
